This release is about what happens after the bytes land on your disk. A customer pointed out that a full backup came down with today’s date on every file, unfamiliar 12_IMG_2041.jpg names, and none of the metadata our website promised. They were right — so 1.1.0 delivers it.
Metadata alongside your photos
Each album folder now contains a FlickrVault-metadata.json. For every photo it records the title, description (caption), tags, date taken, upload date, last-updated date, license, owner, media type, location (when the photo is geotagged), a link back to the original on Flickr, the filename it was saved as, and the full EXIF record Flickr holds for the photo. The file is keyed by Flickr photo ID and merged on every run, so incremental backups keep it complete.
File dates match your camera
Every downloaded file’s modified date — and its created date on macOS and Windows — is set to the photo’s date taken on Flickr (falling back to the upload date). Finder and Explorer now sort your backup the way your camera shot it, instead of by download time.
EXIF restored when Flickr stripped it
Original files keep their embedded EXIF untouched. When a downloaded image has no EXIF (Flickr strips it from resized variants), FlickrVault now writes back the EXIF Flickr recorded at upload — camera make and model, capture dates, exposure, aperture, ISO, focal length, lens, author and copyright. Existing EXIF is never overwritten.
Filenames are the Flickr title
Photos are saved as <title>.<ext> — for example Sunset over the bay.jpg. Duplicate titles in the same album become <title> (2).jpg, <title> (3).jpg and so on, and this is enforced across parallel downloads so nothing is ever overwritten. Untitled photos are saved as Untitled.jpg. Backups made with earlier versions (<number>_<title>.jpg) are still recognised and never downloaded twice.
Upgrading an existing backup
Run a backup again into the same folder and FlickrVault will skip every photo already on disk, stamp the correct dates onto the existing files, and write the metadata file — no re-download, no credits spent. To get the new filenames and EXIF backfill as well, back up into a new, empty folder instead; re-downloading a photo within 7 days of the original download is free.
